GQ: Best Safety Razor for Comfort
Single-Blade Razors for Men
A single-blade razor uses one replaceable blade instead of a cartridge stacked with three to five. One clean pass means far less tug and irritation, fewer ingrown hairs, and a closer shave once you find your angle. Blades cost pennies, so you get a better shave for a fraction of what cartridge refills run over a year.

Single Edge SE vs. Single Edge MAX
- Head type
-
Fixed head. Holds a consistent angle so it's easy to learn.
-
Pivoting head. Follows the contours of your face for a closer, more adaptive pass.
- Skill level
-
Beginner-friendly. The forgiving starting point for anyone new to single-blade shaving.
-
For experienced shavers. The reward once the SE feels like second nature.
- Single Edge Blades
-
Two-hole injector-style blade. Any standard injector blade fits. Buy from us or anywhere else. Ours are twice as thick as a standard razor blade, made in Seki City, Japan. About $1 each, 8 to 10 shaves per blade. Slide it in and the blade seats at a fixed angle. You never touch the edge.
-
Three-hole blade, twice as thick as a standard razor blade, made in Seki City, Japan. About $1 each, 8 to 10 shaves per blade. Loads through the patented SwitchBlade cartridge: turn the knob and the blade seats on three posts at the angle the head was built for. You never touch the edge.
- Closeness of shave
-
Very close, with a fixed, predictable angle.
-
Closest shave in the lineup, the pivoting head hugs every curve.
- Who it's built for
-
First-time single-blade shavers and anyone who wants a simple, dependable daily razor.
-
Shavers who've mastered the SE and want to level up to the closest possible shave.

Single-blade razor FAQ
How is a single-blade razor different from a cartridge razor?
A cartridge razor stacks three to five blades so each one tugs the hair up before the next cuts it — which is what causes irritation, razor bumps, and ingrown hairs for a lot of people. A single-blade razor makes one clean cut at skin level. Less pulling, less irritation, and a closer shave once you dial in your angle.
Which is better for beginners, the SE or the MAX?
Start with the SE. Its fixed head holds a consistent angle, so it's the easiest way to learn single-blade shaving. The MAX has a pivoting head that delivers an even closer shave — it's the natural next step once the SE feels like second nature, not a harder version to fight through on day one.
Do single-blade razors help with ingrown hairs and razor burn?
Often, yes. Because a single blade cuts the hair once at the surface instead of pulling and snapping it below the skin, there's far less of the irritation that leads to razor burn and ingrown hairs. Many people switch to single-blade shaving specifically to solve those problems.
How often do I need to replace the blade?
Most people get five to seven comfortable shaves from a single blade, then swap it in a couple of seconds. Replacement blades cost a fraction of what cartridge refills do, so ongoing cost stays low.
Is a single-blade razor cheaper than a cartridge subscription?
Over time, yes — by a wide margin. Cartridge refills are one of the more expensive ways to shave. Single-edge blades cost pennies each, so after the razor pays for itself you're spending a fraction of what a cartridge subscription runs each year.

Been using. For over a year. Love the single blade. Won't go back to the multi blade brands
Best razor ever! I ordered the SE because I had never tried Razorloom and just wanted a starter razor, turned out to be the absolute best! Highly recommend!
I was not believing but was about to buy an expensive electric razor. This made sense to me and would save me a lot of mad money if it worked well. It does!
I'm 71 and have been shaving with a safety razor since 14. This single edge injector razor is the smoothest shave I've ever had.
